The objective of the research is to prepare long range plans directed to certifying vehicle crashworthiness on the 'drawing board'. Potential gains and difficulties are outlined. Pertinent biomechanical, economic data and existing structural analytical methods from the automotive and related fields are reviewed. Promising analytical methods are investigated in more detail, and an economic evaluation scheme is proposed and demonstrated. Both long and short term suggestions for future research are included. It is concluded that (1) existing methods cannot be easily adapted, (2) dramatic injury reductions cannot be achieved by structural changes alone and (3) the success of the required analytical methods is not assured. Appendices include optimization studies on vehicle crush characteristics and recommended experimental measurements support analytical methods. (Author)
