Fires aboard naval ships, especially aircraft carriers, and specifically fires in passageways, have been propagated through bulkheads into adjoining passageways and compartments. The propagation of fires has been traced in many instances to burning of the electrical power, lighting and communication round wire cables that are mounted in cable runs and bundles overhead. This study has three areas of investigation, cable insulation and jacketing, protective coatings and coverings, and methods of testing for fire and flame resistance. The study is to consider short-term solutions that are applicable to ships presently operating in the fleet and long-term solutions applicable to future design and construction.
