The deployment of the Data Link Test and Analysis System (DATAS) as a Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) monitor at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is documented. The purpose was to identify aircraft which were reporting illegal Mode Select ID's. Data were also taken on the downlink portion of the environment in order to characterize the environment after the implementation of TCAS. The project was conducted by the Airborne Collision and Data Link Systems branch of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Technical Center.
