The US Army Limited War Laboratories (LWL) developed a ventilated flying suit system to provide a more suitable cockpit environment for OV-1 (Mohawk) aircraft crews. The crews experience high cockpit temperatures, particularly while flying visual low reconnaissance (1500 feet and below) missions in the RVN. The outside air temperatures are approximately 95F and the 'greenhouse effect' increases the temperature in the cockpit to approximately 100F. These temperatures create undesirable operating conditions and decrease the overall crew efficiency. The ventilated flight suit system was evaluated by means of questionnaires and interviews of the commanders, aviators, and maintenance personnel to determine its operational suitability.
