An introduction to the mission purposes, the payload, and the main SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) features is given and the key thermoelastic problem is addressed through the presentation of the very tight pointing requirements imposed by the experiments in the spacecraft structure, and through the description of the basic design aspects consequently chosen. The analytical verification aspects are addressed and some preliminary results obtained through ESATAN (ESA Thermal Analysis Network) modeling are presented. Design driving elements are identified and present criticalities and/or open points are discussed.
