Longitudinal flight path control is discussed for conventional airplanes from the control theory viewpoint. Pilot control defined as minimizing quadratic integral criteria led to the empirically asserted piloting technique that the flight path should be controlled by the elevator rather than by the throttle. Simplified analysis in terms of Wiener filter formulation revealed analytically the basic effect of the backside parameter on flight path control by the elevator including the effect of the pilot's efforts to correct the aircraft deviations due to the vertical gust. This was also substantiated through the more detailed analysis in terms of exact regulator problem formulation.
