A preliminary conceptual design intended to meet the specifications recommended in Volume III for the Research Safety Vehicle (RSV) is presented. It is expected that this preliminary design will be the basis for further development in Phases II and III of the program. The design assumes derivation of the RSV from a production automobile. In this part of the study, numerous candidate base vehicles were considered. The rationale behind the selection of the particular vehicle (designated the C-6) is discussed. Extensive data on the geometric, performance and crash properties of the C-6 are presented. This preliminary design considers base vehicle alterations relative to styling, occupant/cargo packaging, running gear and crash safety. The dimensional and style characteristics recommended for the RSV were verified by development of a full-scale vehicle mock-up. Major design attention was placed on bumpers, vehicle structure and compartment interior components.
