The report documents a study made of the optimization of typical aircraft structural components using the Automated Structural Optimization Program (ASOP) described in AFFDL-TR-70-118. The structures examined were a fuselage structure for a proposed space shuttle orbiter and a wing structure for the same vehicle. Examples are given of practical finite element modeling of these structures. (Author)
