Pedestrian accidents constitute the majority of road deaths in the Republic of South Africa. Pedestrian accidents are mainly caused by the careless and hazardous behaviour of both pedestrians and drivers, but are also due to inadequate education, law enforcement and engineering measures to safeguard pedestrians. An integrated ergonomic program involving these elements proved to be successful in decreasing pedestrian casualties in Daveyton.
