Three areas of human factors concern in aviation--performance assessment, prediction of performance, and simulation in training--are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the necessity for providing objective and standardized evaluation of flight trainees, rather than using the unreliable subjective evaluation methods. Methods for predicting trainees' performance, particularly in combat situations, are being sought. Use of simulation in training helicopter pilots has been minimal, but recently two devices were developed to provide better transfer of training from the device to the actual helicopter situation.
