The launch and early orbit phase of the Hipparcos mission are studied. This comprises the launch, the highly eccentric transfer orbit, the firing of the satellite's solid rocket motor at the transfer orbit apogee to boost it into a circular near synchronous orbit, the drift to the final geosynchronous station at 12 degrees west, and the sun acquisition. All the steps between the launcher separation up to the station acquisition are analyzed. The initial steps for the sun acquisition, and for the initialization of the normal mode attitude control and real time attitude determination, are included.
