In 1981, the ESA and JRC organized a European campaign aimed at the evaluation of the potentiality of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for different disciplines of earth sciences. The radar was a Canadian SAR mounted on a Convair-580 aircraft. After a call for experiments, the selected sites were flown and the investigators received the optical or digital data recorded during the overflights. The final workshop where results were presented and discussed was held in 1984. Volume 1 contains the main general conclusions of the campaign (image processing, radar calibration, disciplinary results) and the recommendations. Volume 2 contains the individual contributions of the investigators.
