In a wind tunnel study on an aeroelastic carbon fiber fin/rudder model, it is demonstrated how structural design methods can be checked by experiment beginning in an early stage of the design. Emphasis was put on the static aeroelastic investigations, which became more important in high performance A/C design. Transonic measurements with a rigid balance based on an opto-electronic deformation measurement method were performed. An attempt was made to evaluate rudder efficienies from these aeroelastic measurements. A nonlinear behavior of the rudder based on geometrical coupling with the fin box played an important role in the test evaluation.
