In countries which have not developed a programme of satellite firings there are a number of experiments which can be undertaken with sounding rockets, which may be mutually complementary to the measurements being made by satellites. By comparatively modest experiments, direct participation in space research can be undertaken. Australia has participated in several sounding rocket-satellite experiments, which are described. In 1962 a cloud survey immediately after a cold front passage involved the TIROS satellite, a sounding rocket, an aircraft and ground instrumentation. A further experiment in 1966 involved the measurement of solar ultra-violet and X-ray radiations from a LONG TOM sounding rocket at the time similar measurements were being made during a pass of the EXPLORER 30 satellite. The data obtained allowed a determination of the radiation incident upon the atmosphere and its absorption by molecular oxygen and ozone. A similar correlated satellite and sounding rocket experiment was conducted during the orbital life-time of the first Australian Satellite WRESAT launched from Woomera on 29 November, 1967.
