The principal objective of the study was to assess the capability of an ultrasonic nondestructive inspection system to identify tire groups with a high propensity to failure among the groups selected for the Compliance Test under MVSS 109. A secondary objective was to assess the capability of the system to identify changes caused by the Compliance Test. The tire population used for the study consisted of 1440 tires purchased by the NHTSA Office of Standards Enforcement.
