A program was undertaken to investigate current research and development of solid industrial fork truck tires, embodying non-skid properties for successful operating conditions on wet steel plates, such as may be found aboard a supply ship; and test standard commercial and special solid industrial fork truck tires designed for improving traction and eliminating skid hazards. Extensive operating tests have indicated that the amount of skid, of test tires having anti-skid treads, is much lower than that occuring with smooth tread tires. Test tires having maximum decrease in skid were not necessarily the most practical, due to excessive wear and deterioration of the tires. Some of the tires which had better wear qualities and still maintained good anti-skid characteristics, are more desirable. Results demonstrated that the following test tires are most practical both from the standpoint of wear and anti-skid quality: military type tread tires with soft rubber inner core construction; standard commercial anti-skid tread design; specially constructed tires, having 1 1/2 to 2 inch sipings and circular grooves approximately 1/4 inch wide.
