On May 30, 1984, Zantop International Airlines, Inc., Flight 931, a Lockheed Electra L-188 (N5523) was a regularly scheduled cargo flight from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti, Michigan. There were three flightcrew members and a non-revenue passenger on board. The cockpit voice recorder indicated that the flightcrew experienced gyro problems during the climb. The airplane entered a right descending spiral as the indicated airspeed increased. There was a sound similar to structural failure during inflight breakup on the cockpit voice recorder, the airplane wreckage was scattered over an area 2 miles long by 1 mile wide. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of the accident was the airplane's entry into an unusual attitude and the inability of the flightcrew to analyze the flight condition before there was a complete loss of control.
