A 21 year old male tree trimmer foreman was struck by a pickup truck while feeding brush into a chipper attached to the rear of a truck. He was employed by a tree trimming company with 4,000 workers. As the victim was loading brush into the chipper, a pickup truck slammed into the chipper, killing the victim instantly. All the safety cones had been run over and there were no braking skid marks on the dry road. The wood chipper had been torn away from the truck and destroyed and the company truck had moved forward 8 feet. The pickup was estimated to have been traveling 55 miles per hour at the time of the impact. The driver of the pickup had no recollection of the accident at all. It was recommended that a flagman or lookout be present while work is being performed on the sides of roadways normally open to the public. Workers should wear high visibility clothing while working on the sides of roadways.
