Skidding and loss of control are frequently reported in accidents. Probably they could often be avoided by 'pumping' the brakes, i.e. by quickly and repeatedly applying and releasing the brakes. This report describes an experimental device for doing this automatically. On a wet surface having a low frictional coefficient the device prevented the wheels from locking and without loss of control gave 10 per cent shorter braking distances than when the wheels locked without the device in use. On a dry surface having a high frictional coefficient the wheels were again prevented from locking but the braking distances were about 10 per cent greater than when the wheels locked, but this disadvantage was offset by the fact that control was not lost. The tests showed that a pumping device would probably be of considerable benefit on a car, but that the experimental version requires further development to make it a practical proposition.
