TIROS-M, the forerunner of a series of second generation operational meteorological satellites, will be launched no earlier than 15 January 1969 from the Western Test Range by a two-stage Delta N-6 vehicle. This spacecraft, funded and developed by NASA to meet ESSA operational requirements, is the first of an improved type which will replace the two types of TIROS Operational Satellite (TOS) currently in operation in the National Operational Meteorological Satellite System (NOMSS). The attached Mission Operation Report contains the specific details pertinent to this mission. Of particular significance is the newly developed three-axis stabilization system, referred to as stabilite, which together with the spacecraft s large size permits the inclusion of a variety of sensors in one spacecraft. TIROS-M will carry redundant television cameras for stored global cloud cover data for remote readout, redundant APT cameras for local readout of global cloud cover data, newly developed redundant scanning radiometers for global cloud data for remote and local readout both day and night, a flat plate radiometer to obtain data on the global heat balance, and a solar proton monitor for routine observation of solar proton activity. By virtue of its night- time viewing capability TIROS-M serves to fully satisfy the first objective of NOMSS, which is to obtain global cloud cover data both day and night. This will be the first launch of the Delta vehicle utilizing a Thor booster with six solid motors for thrust augmentation. The solid motors will be consecutively ignited in sets of three. Al I six motor cases wil I be jettisoned at the same time. This will also be the first NASA long tank Thor mission from Space Launch Complex 2 West (SLC2W), acquired from the Air Force in January 1969 and modified by NASA. As the first of the Improved TIROS Operational Satellite series, TIROS-M will be designated ITOS-I if it is successfully injected into orbit.
