The development of restructed draft dry bulk carriers is recognized as a means for reducing transportation costs by permitting the operation of larger vessels out of existing ports. For three given drafts, a parametric computer design study of deadweight capacity and corresponding dimensions and form characteristics is carried out to determine maximum feasible deadweight, subject to assumed physical boundary conditions and economic considerations. Restricted draft ship characteristics selected for the study are developed into concept designs by conventional design methods. For resulting characteristics and costs are compared with conventional deep draft vessel characteristics and costs. Finally, technical problem areas associated with restricted draft ship designs are recognized and discussed. (Author)
