This technical report presents the results of the 'Trimode Critical Experiments' program conducted in-house at the Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory, Edwards AFB, California. The concept utilizes two monopropellants which are first decomposed in their respective catalytic reactors before being injected into the chamber where combustion occurs. The boiler plate hardware was designed to provide 100 psia chamber pressure using H2O2/silver screen and hydrazine/Shell 405 as propellants/catalysts. The critical experiments consisted of bipropellant performance and response evaluation and bed-contamination investigation. The quality of data obtained was of low order; the data serve as gross indicators of the feasibility of the Trimode engine concept. The results obtained generally indicate the feasibility and the desirability of further development of the concept. C* efficiencies observed ranged from 79 to 98% of maximum C* with hot-bed ignition response of approximately 0.040 seconds. The bed-contamination investigation revealed no gross contamination problems. (Author)
