The report summarizes the state of the art of transit station planning and design, and describes the design process in terms of: (1) design parameters and standards (e.g. stairways, ramps, and passageways; escalators; platforms; fare and exit control; moving walkways and ramps; bus facilities; parking facilities), (2) design of the station environment (e.g. lighting, ventilation, acoustics, and fire control; passenger information and graphics; passenger security; commercial activities; special provision for the handicapped) and (3) design methodology (e.g. deterministic, probabilistic, and impedance models; simulation; and validation problems). The report also deals with: (1) planning and implementation issues (e.g. problem identification; data needs; political and budgetary constraints), (2) station design problems (e.g. human factors; graphics and information systems; physical and operating features; crime control; passenger demand; access and parking; concessions and advertising), and (3) methodology and computer modeling (e.g. application, role, and attributes).
