Duplin County, North Carolina, requested federal funds under the Airport and Airway Development Act for the following development: Reimbursement for land previously acquired; construct runway 3700 feet by 75 feet with aircraft parking apron and connecting taxiway; install a medium intensity runway lighting system including a rotating beacon and visual approach slope indicator; fencing; a non-directional radio beacon; and other related items. The proposed work will result in the development of a general aviation airport which will accommodate substantially all propeller aircraft of less than 12,500 pounds. There will be slightly increased intermittent noise levels and a slight increase in air pollution due to aircraft operations. There will be very little clearing in the proposed project since most of the merchantable timber has recently been removed. There will be minor 'short-term' adverse effects normally associated with construction.
