The Navy Automated Transportation Documentation System (NAVADS) is a multiple subsystem, multi-model automated data processing and management information system. The system is designed to accept, release, consolidate, and track material requests at Naval stock points. This thesis will address some of the basic, current, and historic issues that confront the system and those issues which have found solutions within the NAVADS framework. The paper will also provide a rudimentary description of the system operation in terms of the files, programs, and solution methods used by the system to perform its mission. Additionally, the thesis will provide a brief review of a civilian freight operation within the ADP environment. The thesis is designed to work as a primer to provide an orientation in basic NAVADS operations and the problematic and operational environment in which it operates. (Author)
