Considerable effort has been made in Ohio to improve night driving visual guidance on the state highway system. The continuing large scale installation of raised pavement markers (RPMs) in various combination with other devices (e.g., pavement markers, post delineators) is an example of the effort. The ultimate purpose of delineators is to improve night and inclement weather driving safety. It is realized, however, that the relative effectiveness is influenced by factors such as geometrics, traffic, and environmental conditions (e.g., degree of curvature, speed, wet pavement). The objectives of the study were to measure the safety impact of increased night time visual guidance provided by raised pavement markers by analyzing available before-and-after accident data; and to develop a methodology to evaluate the effectiveness of roadway delineation systems.
