The automobile industry could solve both the technical and economic problems associated with meeting the standards mandated by the Clean Air Act if an air quality strategy is selected that will safeguard the environment and guarantee a substantial improvement in automobile fuel economy. Essentially the automobile's contribution to air pollution is determined by: the number of automobiles, the varieties and rate per mile at which they emit pollutants, and the number of miles traveled by automobiles. Alternative strategies for decreasing automobile air pollution are considered.
