Mass transportation systems are needed which offer an alternative to the automobile in terms of quality, as well as cost, of service. An example is the Dial-A-Ride System which uses small buses to provide door-to-door service within urban areas. The routes and schedules are determined by a digital computer which monitors the system and receives requests. Routing decisions are made according to an algorithm. In the report algorithms which might be used in such a system are examined.
