The report presents the final engineering development work on the feasibility and economics of sheathing a standard steel ship hull with copper-nickel panels. The economics that could be achieved by the maritime fleet through higher fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs was verified during the first two phases of the program. The report defines the actual cost to install copper-nickel panels on a steel hull using today's shipyard practices and projected cost savings based on the introduction of near-term modifications to existing equipment. Included in the report are tabulated hull stress analyses and welding parameters that apply to the various copper-nickel attachment procedures, analyses of major cost centers and the effect each has on the installed cost. The recommendations address ways that this new performance technology can be made available to the U.S. maritime fleet.
