This paper presents the results of a survey to determine the distribution of the weights of passengers and their hand baggage travelling on scheduled air services. The survey was conducted at Heathrow Airport in the winter of 1981 where both international and domestic passengers were surveyed. Passenger weights are required by the Authority as background to their function of setting and upholding notional passenger and baggage weights. These notional weights are used extensively in establishing operational standards for aircraft in making due allowances for the weights of passengers and their baggage without going through the troublesome exercise of having to weight individual passengers for all flights.
