Presented is a description of a model developed for the purpose of conducting vehicle handling studies and the results of a combined braking and steering handling study utilizing the described model. The model developed has seventeen degrees of freedom and its performance for fixed control steering inputs has been verified for lateral accelerations greater than 0.5g. The basic model was derived from the work of R. R. McHenry and N. J. DeLeys for the Bureau of Public Roads and is programmed on a hybrid computer. The hybrid computer allows the model to operate at real and close to real time (ten times real time), significantly reducing computer time and cost required when compared to using a digital computer only. The model takes into account the effects of springs, shock absorbers, stabilizer bar, tire forces (radial, circumferential and side), wheel slip, nonlinear tire characteristics, steering system compliance, and power steering nonlinear boost characteristics. The system inputs are steering wheel torque, brake torque and driving torque. (Author)
