The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) will be launched in February 1981 for a mission of one year duration. The purpose of the mission is to procure a full sky catalog in the infrared waveband. The IRAS satellite will be equipped with an onboard computer system to control the satellite and to execute the measurements necessary to fulfill the mission. The software in the onboard computer must fulfill two conflicting requirements: to provide a reliable system that under no circumstances allows direct radiation from sun and earth into the experiment telescope; to provide a flexible measurement tool that will use the one year mission duration (dictated by the amount of cooling agent onboard) as efficient as possible. The onboard software system is described and the compromise that has been chosen to fulfill the conflicting requirements is discussed, i.e., the work division over read only and random access memory.
