The five papers in this volume describe analyses of the effectiveness and use of child restraints, based on traffic accident data. All five were written between May 1983 and November 1986. The topics addressed include prevalence of restraint use among children (by age, state, and year), effectiveness of various methods of restraining children (child seats, adult belts, seat positioning), and issues in estimating child restraint use and effectiveness from accident data. The principal accident data sources are the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS), the National Crash Severity Study (NCSS), the National Accident Sampling System (NASS), and state data files.
