On the evening of October 25, 1978, the research vessel (R/V) DON J. MILLER II, inbound to Seattle, Washington, collided with the fishing vessel (F/V) WELCOME in Admiralty Inlet. Shortly thereafter, the WELCOME sank. There were no deaths or serious injuries. Damage to the MILLER was negligible; the WELCOME was a total loss estimated at $300,000. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the MILLER's master leaving the control of his vessel unattended while the MILLER was still the burdened vessel in an overtaking situation. Contributing to the accident were the failure of the WELCOME to ascertain the whereabouts of the MILLER before changing course and the failure of both the MILLER and the WELCOME to maintain proper lookouts.
