Veiling glare from surface scratches, turbidity and fluorescence in spectacles and visors may have a significant effect on the vision of pilots. The problems of measuring the stray light produced by these items are indicated, and results of some actual measurements are presented in the form of a single index for each sample uner representative conditions. Such an index may provide a way of avoiding premature replacement of expensive items, as well as indicating items which have become a flight safety hazard. The techniques appear suitable for extension to aircraft transparencies, and to related fields such as the effects of veiling glare on the vision of motor vehicle drivers. (Author)
