A comprehensive study was made of the goods vehicle traffic generation and attraction of a wide range of industrial and commercial companies using a postal questionnaire. The report describes the development of the questionnaire, the selection of companies in three areas of England and includes an analysis of the survey replies. The concept of 'freight traffic intensity' of a company was developed. For analysis purposes, companies were classified into twenty-four groups with similar traffic generation characteristics. The results of a number of regression and other analyses are presented. A comparison made between derived trend lines and the results of an independent, classified, count of goods vehicle traffic concerned with an industrial estate within one of the study areas, showed a high level of agreement. The use of the results for prediction purposes is discussed and guidance given on the accuracy of various possible methods. (Copyright (c) Crown Copyright 1982.)
