Missile configuration concepts are examined with a view toward determining the most suitable geometric arrangements for the different mission applications and to determine means whereby missile performance might be improved in terms of maneuverability, aerodynamic efficiency, aerodynamic range, and design simplicity. Aerodynamic systems receive the most attention primarily because of the potential for increased reliability and the probability of lower cost of the less sophisticated aerodynamic concepts. Among the geometric variables that were investigated are the afterbody shape, the forebody shape, the wing and tail planform and location, the use of various types of propulsion systems, and the use of various types of control systems including the aft tail, canard arrangements, and wing controls. Cruise missiles and hypersonic airbreathing missiles are included.
