The report covers an investigation of the economic attractiveness and the technical feasibility of large crude oil tankers with increased depth operating with segregated ballast only. A conventional 250,000 DWT crude oil carrier was compared with two high depth versions. Construction of such ships was found to be technically feasible. Initial ship costs were estimated to increase by 7-13% with a corresponding increase in required freight rate of 6-11%. While these designs would not eliminate oil pollution they could reduce pollution resulting from normal operations by 70-90%. Several areas requiring additional investigation were identified.
