The present report, the first in a series of three reports, will document the injuries and illnesses diagnosed at repatriation for Navy Repatriated POWs (RPWs). Subsequent reports will be devoted to the Army and the Marine Corps experiences. All of the Navy RPWs were aviation officers (102 pilots, 36 bombardier/navigators); their average age at time of capture was 30.8 years, and the duration of captivity averaged 61.7 months. All but two of the Navy RPWs were shot down over North Vietnam (NVN), and were held in the North throughout their captivity. The two men who were shot down over South Vietnam were moved North within one week, and spent the balance of their captivity there. The present report describes the procedures and findings of the medical teams that examined and treated the Navy RPWs at Clark Air Force Base (Republic of the Philippines) and at 11 mainland Navy Hospitals.
