High speed ground transportation vehicles that are propelled by linear induction motors (LIM) may prove to be attractive alternative for high speed inter-city transit. One concept for such a vehicle system employs a steel I-beam to guide the vehicle. The steel I-beam, onto which has been bonded some material of high conductivity, serves as the reaction rail for the LIM. The purpose of the study was to determine if a steel I-beam acting as the LIM reaction rail could be used to guide and support the LIM as well as guide the vehicle. If such an arrangement would prove practical, a large cost saving might be realized in guideway construction for the Tracked Air Cushion Vehicle (TACV). (Author)
