This paper focuses on the Joint Force Commander's ability to leverage international law (relating to blockade, visit and search, maritime interception operations, maritime exclusion zones, cordon sanitaire, and maritime warning zones) as an asymmetric means to enhance naval operations. This paper historically analyzes the aforementioned areas of international law so that today's Joint Force Commander can apply the insights from lessons learned to current operational matters. Specifically, this paper strives to educate and impress upon the Joint Force Commander that international law methods of warfare are invaluable weapons that may be employed to enhance naval operations, reduce American casualties, and help secure mission accomplishment in future operations.
