In order to provide a more nearly complete comparison with the one and one-half staged operational missile presented in previous summary reports, further investigation was made into missiles utilizing other staging methods. These missiles investigated have the same gross weight (400,000 lbs.), initial thrust (600,000 lbs.), second stage thrust (120,000 lbs.), propellent (gas-lox), and similar type of construction, so as to be directly comparable. Comparisons are made of the reliability, cost, payload vs range, ease of handling, and flexibility of operation. The missiles investigated are certainly only a few of the possible staging combinations, but it is felt that they represent methods which are of general interest and provide best performance competition.
