Spare aircraft engines routinely are needed to replace those engines that periodically undergo necessary maintenance or major overhaul. The Air Force and Navy have investments in spare engines of about $2.5 billion. A difficulty is that the cost of acquiring additional spare engines to meet their computed requirements greatly exceeds available funds. In this report, GAO proposes several alternatives for reducing investments in spare engines while still providing effective aircraft support.
