The ever increasing use of synthetic flight trainers (SFTs) in U.S. Air Force flight training programs makes necessary efficient and cost-effective SFT acquisition. This thesis presents a mathematical model which employs a mixed integer linear programming approach to analyze the comparative costs and task-training capabilities of proposed SFTs. In addition to detailing the model, the thesis presents an example formulation in which the model was used to evaluate the SFTs proposed for the flight training program for initial qualification in the A-10 aircraft. From the results of the example formulation, the authors concluded: that mixed integer linear programming models are useful for selecting the most economical SFT or combination of SFTs to complement an aircraft in a flight training program, that the evaluation of SFTs should include several proposed SFTs with various task-training capabilities rather than a limited number of SFTs with similar task-training capability, that part-task SFTs may be a cost saving means of providing flight simulation, and that SFTs are an economical means of lowering flight training program costs.
