An analytical study in computer-aided vehicle design is presented. The vehicle under study is the Unlimited Competition Racing Hydroplane, and the design objective is to obtain maximum lift/drag ratio in addition to adequate pitch plane stability. After discussion of the design concept, the mathematical model used to represent the aerodynamics and hydrodynamics of the configuration is developed. The mathematical model is then programmed for solution on a digital computer and an optimization study is performed. It is concluded that a tentative preliminary configuration is obtained through computer-aided design, but that the complexity of the concept will require further tow tank and wind tunnel model tests.
