A transition proposed for use between a standard W-beam approach guardrail and a performance level two bridge railing was designed and tested to performance level two of the 1989 Guide Specifications for Bridge Railings. Thrie-beam rail elements were used in the transition. The prototype test installation was connected to a 32-in (813-mm) vertical faced concrete parapet bridge railing. Acceptable performance of the final design was demonstrated.
