The United Nations (UN) primary forum for international discussions on space activities and the environment is the General Assembly's Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, for which the Office for Outer Space serves as the secretariat. Other elements of the UN system are also concerned with the use of space technology for monitoring the environment. The work of the UN relating to space activities and the environment focuses on two areas: the promotion of international cooperation in the use of space technology for monitoring the terrestrial environment; and working to ensure that space activities do not themselves cause damage to the space or Earth environment. In the use of space technology for monitoring the Earth environment, the Office for Outer Space and the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space play a modest role, generally in cooperation with the specialized agencies and other international, regional and national organizations. In the second area, that of ensuring that space activities do not harm the environment, the UN and the Committee in the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space play a much more central role.
