Volume I summarizes the results as detailed in Volumes II and III. Accident analysis shows that small cars are producing a large and growing part of the accident costs, toward 60+ percent in 1985. The Minicars RSV characterization provides occupant protection in frontal modes to 50 mph and side modes to 30 mph, at low weight. The analysis identifies accident costs by increments of velocity in each of 13 crash modes. It also shows aggregate benefit for safety systems by requiring subsystems to compete with each other for shares of the available benefit.
