The aerodynamic performance of lifting reentry vehicles in the high Mach number (Ma is greater than 10) and high altitude (H is greater than 50 km) regime is analyzed. Due to the high flight velocity of chemical reactions, the low density viscous and rarefaction effects are of importance. Free flight data of the U.S. Shuttle and low density wind tunnel data of DFVLR are used. It is found that aerodynamic performance loss and a destabilizing pitching moment change can be explained by viscous-rarefaction effects.
