The evaluation of the 500S arresting-gear system was conducted using both deadloads and aircraft: the aircraft phase also established aircraft performance with the system. Forty-five ON-CENTER arrestments of deadloads weighing from 16,400 to 54,900 pounds were conducted at speeds ranging from 104 to 171 knots. Deadload testing was stopped before this portion of the program was completed because of the system's inability to safely arrest a 54,900-pound deadload. Seventy-five ON-CENTER and 35-foot OFF-CENTER arrestments of aircraft weighing from 13,100 to 34,500 pounds were conducted at speeds ranging from 98 to 179 knots. The results of these tests, operational limits, and aircraft and arresting-gear performance characteristics are presented in this report. Also presented is information relative to the service life of consumable items (for example, purchase tapes, pendants, etc.) used for this program. The arresting-gear characteristics with the aircraft tested are such that the majority of arrestments ended with the aircraft 'hung up' (the arresting hook retained) in the deck pendant: the use of the retraction motors to free the pendant from the hook is mandatory. In addition, an overrunning clutch on the hydraulic-pump drive mechanism would expedite retraction of the system and significantly lower the time to rebattery the arresting gear. (Author)
